At first, I was shy about walking up to strangers and saying this bizarre greeting, "Trick-or-treat." But, by my third packet of M&Ms, I was taking candy for each hand.
Pauls Halloween was more "passive" as in our neighbourhood (Germany) most kids roam the houses when they learn English at school and learn about Halloween there and not at that young age. Nevertheless things like carving pumpkins becomes more and more popular and common so that we are always prepared to feed some hungry gosts. When someone rang the bell or we heard someone on the stairs he alsway asked if there were more "Geißlein"....which means "litte goat" according to the fairy tale...and not gosts, which is "Geister".
