Since I've been watching a lot of the World Cup, I have decided that my youthful fascination with pop culture has been a bit misguided, and that I will instead dedicate myself to becoming the next great futbol player (you may know the sport as "soccer").
I figured the first thing I need to do is come up with a good one-word name to go by, since that's what all the great players do. So, in honor of Ronaldinho and Robinho, I have dubbed myself Madelinho.
I'm already quite good...

Roughing the kicker! Roughing the kicker!!
Maddie,
I understand your fascination with Brasilian players (in the same line, check out Cristiano Ronaldo from Portugal...) but it is my duty to point out to you that the Swiss team has a bunch of very interesting young players (see it for yourself on the world cup's website under "Best young players"... 3 among 21 are swiss, among them Tranquillo Barnetta who scored against Togo yesterday...yes, I too practice my soccer!)Have fun with the games, and good luck on Thursday, against Ghana!
Maddie,
Your friends stay up very late! Maybe Miriam was up watching the Swiss team play? Who are you pulling for? Does China or HK have a team? Are you getting your beauty sleep? Love, Gram
Dear Gram,
Actually, Miriam is IN Switzerland, so I'm guessing it was actually 8:17 a.m. her time, unless she was up for a feeding and just happened to check my blog.
And don't you all check my blog in the middle of the night, just to be sure you haven't missed anything?

Honey,
I do check your blog morning and night, and love getting your news. But sometimes, when I send you a message, I type as one sleep-walking. Case in point: China or HK. I meant China or Taiwan. Anyway, let me know your favorite team. Grampa and I watched some of the tie-game between the US and Italy on your great-uncle Tim's 52-inch wall-hanging plasma TV. When your baby brother has better toys than you do, it is very, very annoying. Love, Gram
Maddie,
Don't give up so fast. Now that my brother received a US soccer jersey from his dad (by the way, I received NOTHING...I'm still thinking of ways to retaliate. Perhaps I won't recognize him when he comes on Friday) I think the US team has a chance. We'll cheer for them - and for Italy - tomorrow, as long as you cheer for Switzerland on Friday.
PS: Gram, I do stay up late, or maybe I wake up early, but this time, it was time zones playing a joke on you. By the way, I hope to see you again some time, when I visit Maddie.
Dear Gram,
Can you imagine that neither China nor Taiwan even made it into the World Cup? So I am all about the Americans, at least until tomorrow when they will probably be eliminated.
The Chinese women's team is better -- in fact, they're hosting the 2007 women's World Cup -- but I think I may just play for the U.S. when I'm ready.

Sweetheart, Did you cry when your team lost? Do you have a backup team to cheer for? When Miriam gets home, maybe she can come for a visit and we will fix some cheese fondue to drown our American sorrows and celebrate the Swiss -- may they long prevail! I will see you in less than a week. Yippee!!
Wow. Impressive entry Mads. Just pray that when your teeth come in, they don't come in like Ronaldinho's.
You know, I think my teeth may in fact be coming in!
