Day three

I was born March 7, 2006 at 10:37 a.m. It was a difficult move (isn't it always?), but I had to get into a larger space. I felt like I could hardly breathe where I was living before. I mean, I weighed 8 lbs., 13 oz., and was 21 inches long, which is about half the size of Mom.

I had some interesting times at the hospital. My admirers were all over me -- everybody wants a piece, you know? If it's not a diaper change, it's a heel prick. By about the fourth one, I tried to explain that my blood sugars were fine, thank you very much. No luck. Note to self: tell Gram to step up sensitivity training in the Duke nursing program.

Anyhow, it's good to meet you all. I hope to meet you in person, if I can squeeze you into my busy schedule of eating everything in sight and then conking out.

One more question for you world-wise grownups out there: If you call a Web log a "blog," why don't you call a Web link a "blink"?

Dear Mattie, I have followed your progress into the world via your Gram Hays..your ultrasound pictures on her office doors, etc. So, I am very glad you made it so safe and sound into the world. I teach the maternity course for your Gram...so, I will take note of your comments about the nursing sensitivity training. You take care and give your parents the rest they deserve. Staying awake and not allowing these grownups to sleep will make them frantic. Just remember if "momma is not happy, no one is." It will serve you well as you grow up to remember this...and you just focus on growing! Have fun with all the adults...clearly you are a cherished and adored child, as it should be....Helen in Durham

We're mad about Maddie! She's adorable and very funny too -- what a quick wit for such a young girl!
Congratulations to the Hays and praise God for her new life!

Dear Maddie,
Welcome to the world! How precious you are! We can't wait to meet you in person, and we're so happy for your wonderful parents. March "Maddie-ness" will now have a whole new meaning in that Duke-loving household. We look forward to seeing what your picks will be on your NCAA bracket, too.
Blessings,
Cameron and Cader Howard
